I Say... Cowboy Movies and Series

As most of you know I am home a lot these days. My desk sorta looks like this. As you can see there's a TV pretty close to my desk.

Anyway, I've sorta gotten into watching old western movies and series like Maverick, Cheyenne, and quite a few others. Some I'm not real fond of but are interesting in their time and what they show, such as the old 'America's Favorite Cowboy' (says so, right in each show!) Wikipedia reference-linkGene_Autry.

I was born in 1950 so I was immersed in westerns growing up on TV. On the other hand, there was a lot of variety in movies (such as Wikipedia reference-linkThe_Blob, Wikipedia reference-linkCreature_from_the_Black_Lagoon so I wasn't locked into westerns, but those were movies and I was an early TV child.

Just wondering - How many of you are into (or went through a 'phase' in your life) of watching (pre- Wikipedia reference-linkSpaghetti_Western) westerns. Watched any of those old westerns (particularly TV series) lately?

Some old shows I've found on news groups include some Wikipedia reference-linkCimarron_Strip, Wikipedia reference-linkHopalong_Cassidy, and Wikipedia reference-linkSugarfoot.

I am of the same era – but a Brit. So in my early childhood there was no TV (Telly) until I was 8 or 9 (gasp in the US!). So saw Hopalong every Saturday morning at the local ‘Pictures’ (movie theatre). Cost 9d, about 10 - 15 cents. Cannot remember any particular episode – but there was mass cheering for the ‘goodies’ and mass ‘booing’ for the baddies – usually whilst consuming a ‘choc ice’ (3d). In the UK there was an early puppet TV western show called ‘Four Feather Falls’ where the ‘good guy’ had magic guns. I also think there was another (US) western called the Dakotas. Of course there was also (later) Bonanza. The western ‘phase’ lasted quite a time as a kid – of course also 'playing out' as Cowboys & Indians (sorry ‘Native Americans’), interspersed with being Robin Hood (UK series) or Zorro (from the movies) added to this experience. Not seen anything like these for rather a long time.

Forgot – also ‘Champion the Wonder Horse’ and of course the ‘Lone Ranger’. I remember calling my dog ‘Trigger’ after the Lone Ranger’s horse.

So long kemosabe!

Re: Cowboy Movies and Series

I remember "The Rifleman" - had a crush on Mark. Liked "Have Gun Will Travel," "Annie Oakley," and "Fury," too.

However, I really loved monster/sci-fi TV , like "Adventures of Superman," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Twilight Zone," and "One Step Beyond."

I finally found a favorite episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" on Hulu.com. I had been looking for years--the series wasn't available on CD, so I heard about Hulu.com and there it was. I watched it that night--very cool! Check it out; they might have westerns--who knows.
