Re: Swimlane Diagram for Internal Auditing System - Anybody using this?

A process flowchart where functional responsibility is divided into lanes (columns, rows). Peter gives a great example.

It can be called many things (I think deployment chart is popular in automotive)

IT folks have actually codified it in Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN)
A process is represented by a pool (a box with "pool-ish" dimensions)
The pool is divided into lanes (responsibility asignment)

Is the swimlane made in excel. Could you provide the template? Thanks - Stefan
Stefan

We use our own software (Promanade) - you can draw it in Excel or Word, but pagination is difficult and each flowchart is a separate file, which makes it difficult to define a set of processes in one system. It is a common format in the oil and gas sector in the UK.

Abhipatel,

Here is what I came up with some time ago. I really like it if I do say so myself!

It is in French but I have translated the top of each column for you. If you like it, send me a private message and we can get in touch. I will gladly translate it with you over the phone.

Re: Swimlane Diagram for Internal Auditing System - Anybody using this?

It's like a flow chart but each steps being assigned to an owner or department. Swimlane refers to how each lane is meant for each owner (like olympics swimming competition, one lane per swimmer.)
Anyways a picture is worth a thousand words so here, this explains better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swim_lane

Re: Swimlane Diagram for Internal Auditing System - Anybody using this?

Wow, I've been doing these for years, but didn't know they were called anything in particular, much less "swimlane"

Blimey, ya learn something new everyday

I use this in visio and they call it a cross functional chart. Comes in handy for a lot of things.
