Please Help! General Term for Inspection Process of Sample Parts that everyone can understand

Hi,

I am looking for a general term for the inspection process of sample parts. It needs to be understood by people of all kinds of industries.

This is the process (roughly):
- Take samples from first (serial) production
- Test dimensions, performance, material, etc.
- Send report stating parts comply with requirements in drawing.
  • Automotive industry says PPAP
  • Aerospace uses FAI
  • ? uses Initial Sample Inspection Report
But what is a general term for all industries?

Regards,
Kira

Re: General Term for Inspection of Sample Parts

'First Article Inspection' is popularly being used by most. In auto sector too my customers run FAI prior to the PPAP.

As you have stated about taking samples, from the first (serial) production, the PPAP lot may not contain any of these.

Let others chime in to contribute as per their experience.

Re: General Term for Inspection of Sample Parts

Hi,

What are the requirements in general for a FAI (First Article Inspection) - are there standards apart from PPAP and aerospace?

Regards,
Kira

A "First Article Inspection Report" is a requirement placed on the 'supplier' by the 'customer'. The report documents, and certifies that each first article unit, delivered to the buyer, was produced and inspected in accordance with the buyer’s specifications. The report includes all physical, material, and chemical test data associated with the part. [These reports are provided to the buyer and a copy retained by the supplier, for a minimum specified period as required by the buyer.]

The customer also conducts his own FAI on the supplied parts, which includes 'destructive test' as well, wherever need be.

Hope this helps

Re: General Term for Inspection of Sample Parts

Do you Submit FA Report for each shipment or for the total of parts that were produced without changing anything in the process?

As the name suggests, the 'First Article Inspection' is conducted only the first time a componenet is supplied. The number of components required for FAI is determined by the customer.

Hello Wendy McLaughlin,Welcome to the Cove

This is a customer specific requirement, the quantity is determined by the customer, since the components are required to pass through rigorous & gruelling tests and inspection.

You may adopt FAI for in-house inspection too, to surface even a minor non conformity of the product.
