Our company (group of companies) also combines our QMS and EMS, and I have found it to be very effective. Both audits are performed consecutively, with the common sections (such as Management Responsibility, etc) being audited for both systems at the same time.
One minor quirk for us; although each plant has its own TS certificate, all the plants are covered under one EMS certificate, which can be a scary thing, particularly for those of us who supply Ford (Q1 requires 14001 registration to maintain). We have new plants opening in China, and I know that there is a potential for problems during their initial audits.
