Skills Testing - How to get a baseline for training purposes

I need a simple, staightforward test for our machine operators. I want to get a baseline for training purposes

I am looking for something with basic math, blueprint reading and maybe some instrument reading on it.

Any help is appreciated.

Maybe there are some trainers here that won't mind sharing their information, but until somebody offers... Have you identified what the minimum qualifications are to do the job? I would use that and create a test with a few questions to challenge each aspect.

Our trainer has been out over 2 months now due to an illness so I don't have documents. I do know that in the training program, we use the job guidelines as well as basic skills and then test operator ability to answer process questions correctly to gauge where they are in the certification process. We use a combination of classroom and OJT with both written tests and Supervisor OJ observations as a pass/fail to the training.

A word of caution on testing for raises or job promotion based on testing. There a lot of legal considerations when doing these. Check with your lawyer before implementing. Best advice, use testing to id weak areas to train in.

That is our intention. Determine wht we have to work with and what additional training is needed.

Are the employees that you wish to test to gain a base line of skills union employees?
Regardless of union involvement, It would be important to start by developing the skills requirements of employees through existing work instructions and, verifying any required qualifications for the position that they hold.

Our shop is non-union.
