ISO 9001:2008 and Environmental Management System (EMS)

Being ISO 9001:2008 certified, is it necessary to be EMS certified or pursuing an ISO 14001 or ISO 14004? One of or customers got dinged on this, but they are TS certified. Any clarification would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Necessary ... ? No.
The EMS can be driven from within your management directly or be influenced by your customers.

Certainly not for ISO 9001 but some automotive customers require you to have EMS certification - it's a customer requirement rather than TS.
