Please Help! Complying with AS9102 when the supplier is using 3D Model Based Definition (3D MBD)

Does anyone know how to apply and conform with AS9102 when the supplier is using 3D MBD and defining/tracking production efforts in an electronic system? The current situation is that we are having to access multiple "points" in the MES, production planning and extract/print portions that are applicable to a paticular detail part. This process must be repeated for every part of the production planning where the part is modified and the multiple extract, print, compile process must be conducted for ever detail part.

In the past, this info was captured in a traveling QA form, so the current process (multiple extracts) is not that different, it's just that we haven't been able to realize any benefits from having MBD or electronic instructions. Has there been any industry research done on how this is handled. Any pointers or recommendations would be much appreciated.

Re: Complying with AS9102 when the supplier is using 3D Model Based Definition (3D MB

The requirement to complete an AS9102 is contractual and not required by any specification. AS9102 first article inspections are performed on completed product that will be shipped to the customer. The inspections required are to show compliance to contract, drawing and supplied technical specification of you customer. You should only be pulling information 3D MDB for requirements that cannot be directly measured or verified by the person performing the FAI.

AS9102 contains specific requirements for the FAI process and without complete knowledge of your product only general information can be supplied.

Thanks for your reply Jeff. What about if this is what the customer is requesting. Is there any easy way to to access multiple "points" in the MES, production planning and extract/print portions that are applicable to a paticular detail part. With this method it is easy to miss something. Are there any places to research on what other suppliers may do in similar situations that could be helpful. I have searched out on the net and have found nothing beyond the standard and requirements.

Re: Complying with AS9102 when the supplier is using 3D Model Based Definition (3D MB

Within you system you will need to indicate that an AS9102 is contractually required. You are required to bubble the actual customer documents (PO, drawing, specifications) and pull from you system the needed information to complete the FAI plus supporting certifications, test reports etc. It probably would be best if you talked with your IT person to see how you could do this.

I take it you have a copy of AS9102 and have reviewed the entire requirements front to back and then looked at your system to insert the FAI before shipment of product.

Re: Complying with AS9102 when the supplier is using 3D Model Based Definition (3D MB

AS9102 was devloped for blueprint definition part's. I am personally having issues with applying a spec that relates to BP's to MBD's. The blocks that come into question are 5-8 on Form 1. I know there is some debate of what actually controls the part. And we are contractually bound to use this form.

Does anybody have a suggestion on these?
