Please Help! FAIR Software Comparison (Discus/Inspectionxpert/Visual FAIR)

Hello all,

First time posting but long time reading ...

We are a small (10 people) manufacturing company in the UK producing 1-off/small volumes of parts for aero engine OEMs.

We are interested in FAIR software to speed up ballooning of drawings and creation of inspection sheets. We typically produce balloon drawings for all parts and conduct 100% inspection (even if not strictly first article).

I've shortlisted the following:

- Discus
- InspectionXpert
- Visual FAIR

Any information people can provide comparing these would be appreciated. I have already read some other relevant threads. I have just started the Discus trial and intend to trial the others too. So far they seem technically similar with the following differences (please correct any mistakes):

- Discus is in the region of half price of others, year on year including maintenance (but none are cost prohibitive given the apparent time saving they bring)
- InspectionXpert is a standalone programme. Discus and Visual FAIR have further add on modules i.e. possible future (unknown!) benefits. Not important to me unless the choice came to the toss of a coin where this would swing it towards Discus and Visual FAIR.
- InspectionXpert seems to have a useful drawing revision comparison function which automatically colour codes differences between drawings - this would be very valuable. I don't know if the others have this functionality.
- Discus and InspectionXpert output to Excel. I don't know if Visual FAIR does (i would expect it to).
- I'm not certain but think that Visual FAIR includes results input and compared with the balooned drawing whereas this is an add on module for Discus, but not possible with InspectionXpert.
- I get the impression from forums that Discus is more widely used than others - anyone agree/disagree? Why?

Any additional comments or corrections to the above are welcome!

Many thanks

Hello HZ-MS,

Did you look at the video's/demo's on the Visual Fair home page
( )
I myself are also looking for some advice in this because we have a lot of Fairs coming up at our company.
I'm looking forward for any extra information about FAIR software.

Re: FAIR Software Comparison (Discus/Inspectionxpert/Visual FAIR)

Hi all,
I think I can safely say here that the best software package to go for is DISCUS!
I'm a Quality Manager, UK based working for an Aerospace Engineering company and I have been using DISCUS since 2008. I tried most of the software packages available, including VisualFAIR however, during my evaluation process DISCUS proved to be the most professional, user friendly, value for money (measured against ROI) and complete FAIR software package on the market. My decision to go with DISCUS has been one of the best i've ever made. We've had updates and improvements since 2008 which have enhanced the FAIR process further and in general all is good.
Dont be put off by the fact that these guys are in the US as they support the UK customer very very well.
For further information please feel free to get in touch with me and assuming your not a competitor of my employer there is an opportunity to come and see me and witness the benefits first hand. My inspectors have never had it so good!!!!!!!

I am "The Quality Master".

Re: FAIR Software Comparison (Discus/Inspectionxpert/Visual FAIR)

We ended up writing a Sharepoint based application ourselves, to initiate and then store FAIRs. Our FAIRS are primarily done on new supplier parts, not internal FAs. they get initiaited by central Procurement, but inspected by local QA.

Our big problem was letting everyone around our world-wide org know that a first article was coming their way. Then they were prepared with the inspection plan when it hit.

The actual inspection form varies by product, so a canned software wouldn't work.

In a company with a lot of locations and a lot of product types, canned software doesn't seem feasible.

Disagree Rosie.
DISCUS allows you to customise the Forms 1,2,3 to suit your customer. Or ofcourse you can use the std AS9100.
Canned software it aint!

Re: FAIR Software Comparison (Discus/Inspectionxpert/Visual FAIR)

Hi all, thanks for the comments. My own evaulation has been on hold but will start again shortly so I will post anything that may be of interest.

Thanks Mr Happy, yes i've looked at their videos. In fact, all the programme help files are videos - this is a double edged sword though. Very good for training, less so for quick reference but maybe thats less relevant if the training is effective!

The Quality master - will be in touch.
