Am not sure if this is THE-WAY to Motivate the auditor..., but surely it helps to assess/objectivity-of the process.(Questions have to be tweaked to meet the set objective of the survey)

Conceptually, i would like to suggest that Audit-Metrics+ Surprise audits + feedback form would complete the circle to encourage/motivate the Auditor. (not exactly encourage/motivate....its sort of keeping him on heels...)

Surprise audit, evaluation of an area through surprise audit; incentivising the no-observation... although, that's more of an achievement of the line-managers!!!

Metrics system. (measuring the number of observations/improvements linked to the internal audit OR measuring the number of incidents/complaints in the audit-scope/area)

My personal opinion is that I do not like this kind of approach. I would tend to a have a sort of "internal customer satisfaction" of the internal audit acitivities themselves rather than to focus on person.
The process of motivation of the personnel should be pursued by means of other company HR mgmt tools and processes.
I do not see added value in submitting this kind of survey with these questions to the auditees that probably are neither aware of acitvities related to the internal audit, in terms of planning, approach and so on. Said that, they could response to the questions only for sympathy or if the internal audit went well or not so well. The questions could be formulated again focusing on the internal audit process, trying to undestand at what degree of "quality" it was perceived by the "internal customer". The other advice is not to use lots of questions, better to have a small set of question to check what really interests to you.

Surprise audits are not good to evaluate QMS in an organization. They are useful only to check some items where there is no need of planning and are ok for certain sectors ( surely not for quality)
Speaking about the prgramme of internal audit of ISO 9001 , it is important to plan and create awareness of quality within organization . They shall not be used for "finger pointing" but to improve processes and to pursue continuous improvement as well. As a suggestion of mine, they shall create the best atmosphere between internal auditor and auditees. We could say that internal audit are aimed to assess the compliance of the system, while the compliance vs current daily practices shall be a matter of supervisors

Re: How to Motivate Internal Auditors

Hi! Kedar:

What I've done and worked for me is: first of all, identify internal auditors that really like to be an auditor.. those that the supervisor is telling them (forcing them) to be auditors, they will not be highly motivated to conduct audits.... however, I never make a distinction of a "good" or "best" auditor.. what I've been doing is to recognize the effort of all of them, with their supervisors, in open meetings and also, providing certificates to them for different "refresher" trainings.....(those of one-two hours meetings talking about the changes of a standard or customer requirement).... also a good lunch after the "external" audit...(good lunch for them could be even a pizza or a hamburger... it does not have to be something fancy)...
I invite them also to participate in the external audits, as observers and to help me out during the external audit "to shadow"/escort the external auditors... it works pretty good... they learn more and become more interested in audits and how to conduct their own internal audits.

Also, when the economy/budget allows it.. I give them T-shirts, pens, or even nice folders to keep their auditor notes... sometimes, a "congratulations" note/card (or verbal) helps a lot!!

greetings,
Soulma

Re: How to Motivate Internal Auditors

I am not sure whether the list you attached is something from motivation area. It is rather a questionnaire useful for auditor's performance management. Of course can be useful as a form of customer feedback, meaning process owners as customer.
For auditor competence management, you can use the model available here: http://www.theiia.org/guidance/addit...rnal-auditors/
I proposed a model basing partly on the above link, partly on ISO 19011 - you can see the attachment.
For pure motivation, we use a small incentive paid after the audit is done on time, the report is also on time (within a week) and done according to internal rules. I am fully aware that it is a crude tool, but believe me - before its introduction we used to have constant delays.

Kedar, I am not comfortable with this concept of "Best Auditor Award" as a tool to motivate internal auditors.

I would instead identify tools to increase the auditor competency and keep them refreshed by sending to seminars, external courses etc.
