Please Help! Calibration Frequency for a Measurement Device: Vibration Meter

Hi All,

I'm a newbie here.

We are the environmental consultant for monitoring and report the result of measurement. We have a lot of instruement for measurement follow as client requirement. The calibration of instrument have 2 levels, calibrating the instrument before use with a calibrator that we will sent calibrator or instrument to re-calibrate by calibration laboratory service. Calibration frequency for all instrument or calibrator always re-calibrate in 12 months follow as the manual of instruments.

The Vibration Meter have a requirement to annual calibration to ensure continued accurate monitoring result. But the calibration service charge is 482$/ 1 set. We have 8 set of instrument. I need to set the frequency of calibration to 2 years/ 1 times. And I need to write the documents to support this requirement in order to issured the refference when client have visit or audit our department.

Regards,
Sommai

Hi,
what is the precise question you asked for?
I guess you would like to reduce the frequency of calibration of the tools due to reduction costs, isn't it?
Do you set criteria for this in your process of monitoring and measuring device control?
Do you have done studies and have historical data and related analysis to support your decisions?
How much critical are this tool?
I do not know if these considerations of mine can help you to better frame the problem and take a decision. Waiting for other expert covers suggestions for this issue.

Re: Calibration Frequency for a Measurement Device: Vibration Meter

Thank you qusys for good question.

I need to ask for reference document for set the calibration frequency of instrument in order to reduce the calibration cost. As I ask the technician of calibration laboratory, we can extend the calibration frequency from 1 year to 2 years depend on our consideration.
Next... How can I consider to extend from 1 year to 2 year or more?

Do you set criteria for this in your process of monitoring and measuring device control?
No, we didn't .

Do you have done studies and have historical data and related analysis to support your decisions?
Yes, We have 1 times calibration report.
Samples: at frequency 30 Hz.
standard setting (mm/s)** UTT Reading (mm/s) **Uncertainty
5.00 **5.09** 0.07
10.00** 10.15** 0.14
20.00** 20.40** 0.28
30.00** 30.47** 0.40

How much critical are this tool?
You mean the accuracy?
Accuracy of instrument is 3% at 15 Hz. But the lowest frequency of our calibration agency is 20 Hz. At 30 Hz is the point that we chosen by old data.

Are you ISO 9001 certified as well as ISO 17025?
What are your customer requirements for monitoring and measurement devices process you provide?

The reduction of the calibration frequency may also depend on the usage you do of that tool. However, my thought is to collect hisotrical data over the time and analyze them, if the tool gave problem of out spec condition. Then you can take decision based upon risk assessment about this and also taking into consideration customers' requirements for your service.
Hope this helps
