Question AS9100 "B"?

Hello All!

We made it though our 2 1/2 day AS9100A Audit with 11 minor nonconformance's, so minor that well I am just tired...

Anyway, our Auditor wrote on the report and on the CAR's that the Reference standard was AS9100B. I asked him what was that and he said it has been out for awhile now. I told him that we were only interested in becoming AS9100A certified, that is the standard we are using, it is what our Quality Management System is based on, and is what we asked our Registrar for. He said that was fine so we went through and marked off all the "B"'s and put "A"'s.

Have I missed something here?

What the heck is AS9100B?

Thanks, Paula

I have a copy of AS9100A - it is split into two parts: Part 1 is formatted based on ISO9001:2000 while Part 2 is formatted based on ISO9001:1994. It was my understanding that the Part 2 would be deleted once the December 15th expiration of ISO'94 arrived and that revision would be AS9100B. I may be mistaken though, I'm just getting my feet wet now in the aerospace arena.

I may hit you up with some questions this coming year!

Also, congratulations

Default To B or not

As far as I know, AS9100 Rev. B is in ballot, still.

A draft of the AS9100B document contains the following in terms of revision summary:

". . .This revision has deleted the portion of the standard that was based on ISO 9001:1994. The intent to perform this deletion on or about December 15, 2003 was announced in the prior version of the standard.
Also included in this revision are several administrative changes related to clarification of requirements or updates to references. None of these changes affect the technical content of the standard. These changes are located in the following clauses:
7.3.7, 7.4.1, 7.4.3, 7.5.1, 8.2.2, 8.2.4.2, Bibliography
This revision to the standard is considered administrative in nature. Organizations compliant with the prior version of the standard (based on ISO 9001:2000) remain compliant with this version. Existing certifications/registrations to the prior version of the standard (based on ISO 9001:2000) remain valid. . ."

Thanks Sidney and Cari,

That clears things up. I still think our certificate should be for AS9100A until we go through our next surveilance audit, by then AS9100B may be released.
Cari any time I can help let me know! I am planning on posting two Quality Manuals, the first one I sent him was eight pages and he said we were not ready because it did not address many areas. I made some mods to it replaced some information that had been removed when trying to streamline our system, we reviewed and released a new revision then I sent it to him and he decided to come. I will post them as soon as I can because I really would like some feedback on the findings. stay tuned!

The QSA document that he was most likely using (AS9101) was upped to Rev B back in March of this year. Could that be what the confusion was all about?

Yes, I am sure of that because I asked him if he made a mistake because they had just sent him the new forms with the "B" revision. As Sidney stated earlier how the AS9100A would become B sometime in December, I believe he thought it had already happened.

According to the scoring system, which I had to help him calculate, we received 91/100 points.

He was a pleasure to work with, I may not agree with his interpretation of what the Quality Manual shall contain, but really even with a company of 6 people he needed another day to do a more indepth audit. But....he or another auditor will be back!
I just love this stuff

Sidney, is the only change the removal of the 1994-based content, or are there other changes? I'll be teaching an AS9100 class next week, and I'm sure there will be some interest in this...
