OK, our goal is to determine the probability of the two types of errors (I and II, alpha and beta, A and B) in order to best understand the reality behind the measurements. Repeatability, reproducibility and bias are the parameters measured in gage R&R studies in order to arrive at estimates of those errors. The AIAG MSA Measurement System Analysis reference manual gives a very detailed description of the way it is done.

Guys, STOP!! You're way off base. Type A and B have NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO WITH ALPHA AND BETA ERRORS. See: http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Uncertainty/index.html and download technote 1297 from there, or come to my course this coming Monday in Toledo or read ANSI/NCSL Z-540-2 or read my November column in Quality Progress, but whatever, get with the program!!
