Required Reports for Deming Award - Corporate & Departmental Level
Hello
I'm Lyn working in a manufacturing industry with about 300 employees. We are challenging for the Deming Prize Award next year. And, we are required t write two reports - Corporate & Departmental level. Would like to find out more about how to go about writing the report for Human Resources. And, what is the difference in writing the report on the Corporate & Department level. However, I have tried browsing thru the forum but could not find any thread on this particular subject. Hence, would appreciate if anyone could advise.
Thanks.

Congratulations to your organization for having the courage to challenge the Deming Prize!
For folks who may be unfamiliar, here's a brief excerpt from deming.org

The Deming Prize Committee views the examination process as an opportunity for "mutual-development," rather than "examination." While in realty the applicants still receive the examination by a third party, the examiners' approach to evaluation and judgment is comprehensive. Every factor such as the applicants' attitude toward executing Total Quality Management (TQM), their implementation status, and the resulting effects is taken into overall consideration. In other words, the Deming Prize Committee does not specify what issues the applicants must address, rather the applicants themselves are responsible for identifying and addressing such issues, thus, this process allows quality methodologies to be further developed.

In answer to your direct question (Would like to find out more about how to go about writing the report for Human Resources. And, what is the difference in writing the report on the Corporate & Department level.):
Essentially, the concept which examiners look for is a spirited account of how the organization addresses its "opportunities" from a TQM standpoint. In my mind, it means identifying those opportunities [which were unique for your organization] for the committee and explaining how TQM principles helped you exploit those opportunities.
You might take a look at what past winners have done to see how they structured the account of their efforts (the report.)
In a pinch, your organization can always hire a good Demingite (some great ones here in the Cove) to help you "recapitulate" your organization's experience and cast it in the most favorable light. The Demingite won't be much more than a good editor, though, because the essence of the Deming Prize is that the organization really did succeed through application of TQM as envisioned by Deming.
Since there are different categories of the Deming Prize, I'm not clear from your post which category your organization is challenging.
For example, has your organization gone through the "TQM diagnosis" process offered by the Japanese engineering society that administers the prize?

But, I'm still confused about the two reports. Aren't we writing the same contents on the two reports?
Is there any website where I can find any sample report from past winners.
We are challenging for the Overseas award.
As for the TQM diagnosis process, do you mean to say by the JUSE? If yes, then we have not.

Yes, I meant JUSE.
Sample reports:
Why not ask a previous winner directly? The previous winners are all justly proud of their achievement and are almost always willing to give advice to other companies. With luck, you may come across a previous winner who is willing to mentor you in your quest by reviewing your efforts prior to the investigating committee. Your chances of finding a friendly answer will go up if you look at actual or prospective customers or suppliers to your own company first.
It's important to understand you are not competing against previous winners in challenging for the Deming Prize. You do not have to work in isolation or a vacuum. You do not have to limit yourself to previously published or publicly available information.
Good luck!

Why limit yourself to Singapore? You are already dealing with folks on the other side of the planet.
