International Standards take root with manufacturers that export.

By the end of 1998, 52% of all midsize U.S. Manufacturers plan to be certified under the International Organization for Standardization's ISO 9000 series of quality quidelines, says a survey by consultants Grant Thornton in New York. That is a big jump since 1992, when just over half the manufacturers were even aware of the standards, it says.

Of companies that are certified, 66% say they took the step because it helps increase customer satisfaction. "In reality, we believe it is often a strategy for customer retention," the consultant says, since many multinational companies will buy only from certified suppliers. Meanwhile, more companies are pointing out their ISO certification in news releases and other promotional material on their products.

"We always mention our certification whenever we can," says a spokeswoman for Hyundai Electronics America.
