When you use the 'quote button' it inserts what this software calls 'UBB Code'.

It puts in a UBB QUOTE code before the message being quoted
and the UBB END QUOTE code (somewhat like html) after the quoted text. It also
puts the UBB BOLD code and the UBB END BOLD code (the 'BOLD' start and stop codes)
in the reply.

I typically change things a bit (like I take out the bold start and stop) because I'm not thrilled with the bold in the reply, but that's me.

As to making links to other threads, I typically open a new window where I do a search and open that thread I want to reference (yes - it does take some 'work'). I copy the 'address' (url) of the thread (the url for this thread is

code:
http://Elsmar.com/ubb/Forum24/HTML/000015.html

You just paste this in the message. If you have a url in a message, the software automagically changes that code to a link (you can force this with the UBB code). You can read more at /ubb/ubbcode.html By the way, don't put a period right after the url or it will be 'encoded' and the link won't work - leave a space. Also, you do not need the http:// prefix - all you need is the www. prefix.

You're not doing anything 'wrong'. They added the quote feature a few revisions back. I do like it but remember this is 'basic' software (made up of a number of cgi scripts).

When you hit the quote button it does import the entire message. If you only want to quote a part of a message you have to hit the 'quote' icon which brings up the message box with the quoted text within. 'Highlite' the part(s) you do not want and hit your DELETE key - which should leave only the text you want quoted. Do watch to ensure you do not delete any of the UBB code (which are surrounded by brackets [ ]).

The software is not savvy enough to understand that if you highlight a text section in a message in a thread and then hit the QUOTE button you only want to cite only that part of the message you are quoting. Sorry. yes - again, there is some 'work' involved. I typically delete text I don't want quoted because I'm a neat freak.

In so far as user name and password, hit the 'profile' link (should be near the top of the page on the right, along with "profile | register | preferences | faq | search") and you can change your password. If you want a new user name, you have to register again under the name you want to use. It will send you a 'random' password. Then you can go to 'profile' and change that password if you want. If you let me know I'll delete your old user name. As I said - simple software...

Play away. This forum is open for that type of stuff. Start a new topic, add to a thread, quote a message, play with the stuff in general. Be my guest. I'm an old hack and like to play with the stuff myself.
