Hi everyone...

It would be nice to have a section here, specifically related to definitions.... such, what does O.E.M. & P.P.A.P. stand for & what do they mean? -- please define for me...

I'm sure there's a handfull of other acronyms or words that I don't know or not fully sure of...

Also, where can we obtain the latest revisions of ISO/QS for an inexpensive price?

Thanks...

Jason,

I chuckled to myself when I read your posting. My orginal background was in the Medical Device world and moved into an automotive related industry. Folks around here would say OEM this and OEM that. I had no idea what they were talking about for a few weeks. I went through my entire personal library, no answers. Where to find them? Well here is a good place, anywhere on the INTERNET for that matter.

OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer

This acronym applies to any industry. In the automotive world, this acronym stands for Ford, Chrysler, and GM. An OEM is the producer of the 'genuine' product. For example: you can but replacement parts for your car from several different autoparts chains, but you can only buy OEM replacement parts from the dealer or manufacturer.

PPAP - Production Part Approval Process

It is exactly that, a production part approval process. This also resides in the automotive world but it is also exclusive to it (at least to the best of my knowledge). This is the program you must use to submit product to and OEM for their approval. Once approved, you may produce the product under these set conditions for delivery to an OEM or and OEM dealer.

You will never know all the acronyms. My advice, don't try to. Learn the ones you need in your field, the rest will come and go with time. Use the search engines on the INTERNET to seek out articles using the acronym to see what they stand for, or post here. Someone here will probably be able to help you out.

As a matter of fact, does LOL mean Live On Line?

Kevin,

Thanks for answering Jason and myself at the same time. Have been reading these posts now for quite awhile, and have to admit most of it is way above my head (nothing new, there-grin) Have picked up quite a few things, which is why I return...besides Marc's sense of humor. (Am currently assisting in writing 3rd tier work instructions, BTW) Oh, LOL = Laugh out Loud and another FDLOL = Fall down laughing out loud....
Thanks again,

Dusty,

So it isn't Live On Line. No wonder why nobody responded in a timely fashion when I thought they were there, waiting for an answer. Surely, the joke was on me (which I don't mind)! Stick around the Cove, I am learning here all the time.

hmmmmm....

Don, will check with my son...his chat room experience is far more advanced than mine. Have been amazed at the stuff they come up with...FDOTFLOL (fall down on the floor laughing out loud) and the like. Noticed too, the younger generation likes to throw capitals all mixed in with small case...i.e.,
lIkE SomEThinG LiKe ThIs...oh well, maybe a new fad, eh what? :-P

Yea, tell me about it. My son learned more about cyber chat in 2 weeks than I wanted to know in my lifetime.

Marc,

I send lots of folks here. This is a great place to learn, especially for people just getting on the Quality path.

Leona, working for a Plastic Manufacturing organization in Lee's Summit, MO my organization was looking to do business with. She was the one who pointed out where you were working about the time we discussed "virtual anonimity"(I didn't realize you where working just outside the airport perimeter). Leona is the QM and MR for an organization trying for ISO registration this Spring. She has an excellent start, working with a consultant who as far as I can tell is about the middle of the road. I let her know of your Q&A forums here in the Cove to help her along the ISO path. Was she looking for an Above Average Consultant or did she have a specific question for you?

Wanted some sample procedures & manual - those QS procedures I have posted as pdf files (you get to them thru the qs9000.html page) - wanted Word files. Chatted a while. And I think they're fishing a bit. Not totally pleased with consultnat as I understand it. I sent her the Word files.

I'm based (live in) in Cincinnati OH - but I go anywhere. What do you mean by 'airport perimeter'?

Last question: What do you mean by:

"virtual anonimity"

????

Marc,

It was when Barb noticed that I work in Seymour, CT. Basically an old mill town. I think you were on a job in Missouri at that time and I had made a business trip to Kansas City to visit Leona's facility. I can't off the top of my head remember the town you were working in, but when I got back here I looked it up on a map on the INTERNET and found that the town you were working in was just outside of the airport (we were probably fewer than 30 miles apart). If I had known, I would have been looking about the airport for a familiar face (as it would happen, we missed our flight and spent some time waiting for the next available flight to CT).

OK - I remember now. I'm getting old. I forget about 60% of what I learn. That was the first week of last December, wasn't it.

Marc,

You are right on the timing. Don't worry about the 60% you've lost. The other 40% or your memory is working fine, and that might be about 10% more than I can claim at this point. Its been a hectic month and a half and I am just lucky that my head is attached to my shoulders.

Regards,

Kevin
