From: FH To: "'Marc@Elsmar.com'" Subject: Idea for improvement Date: Mon, 9 Apr 2001 16:21:57 -0400 First of all, I'd like to say that you do such a great service by providing the forum. I really appreciate it. I check the forum several times a day to see if there are any new posts. I was wondering if there is a way to have the hyperlink change colors if there is a new reply to a thread that you have already been in before. I know it changes colors when you go into the thread. When I go into the forum, I have to go back into all of the threads to see if there is anything new. It would be nice to know which ones have had replies since you were last there, so that I'd know at a glance which ones to go into. Just food for thought. Keep up the great work. Right now there's not much I can do with the scripts. Sorry. The way it is supposed to work is when you come to the main page of the board, forums with new messages since your last visit are supposed to be identified with a lit light bulb. And the most recent post (day and time) for each forum is listed. Then in each forum the listing is by most recent (top) to oldest (descending). The last post (day and time) for each forum thread is listed. Each thread has a specific url (such as http://Elsmar.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000052.html ). Once you read a thread it is in your history file as read. When someone relies to a post in a thread the url does not change. So - link information is not relevant to when the latest post is / was. If you have the site book marked, make sure your book mark reads http://Elsmar.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi with nothing after it. If your bookmark looks something like http://Elsmar.com/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi? action=topics&forum=Registrars+and+Registration &number=9&DaysPrune=60&LastLogin= , then you will probably want to shorten it to http://Elsmar.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi Also - you must be accepting cookies or the software has no way to know when you were last there. Just a thought - What about creating a "Take a Break" forum of it's own. Sometimes I get a chance to read them, and there are some goodies there, but most times I am too busy looking for other info/updates, and I get pulled in looking for new posts to other topics..... CarolX IP: Logged |
