COREL, PC CHIPS INK LINUX-RELATED BUNDLING DEAL

In an ongoing efforts to break into the top tier of Linux distributors, Corel has signed an OEM deal with hardware maker PC Chips, which will bundle Corel Linux with all of its motherboards.

PC Chips, which claims to have shipped 15 million motherboards to both top-tier and second-tier PC manufacturers last year, has also agreed to bundle Corel's WordPerfect for Linux and WordPerfect Suite 8 with its motherboards.

COMDEX TO SEE A SPATE OF PC ALTERNATIVES

The era of the one-size-fits-all PC appears to be coming to an end, and attendees at this year's Comdex trade show will see some of the results of that trend.

Compaq Computer will not be on the show floor, but is holding an invitation-only "ShowStoppers" press event on Nov. 15, at which it will unveil an Internet appliance.

RED HAT EXTENDS SUPPORT BEYOND ITS OWN LINUX FLAVOR

Branching out into what it believes will be a lucrative market, Red Hat Software on Wednesday announced it will offer a number of consulting and support services for open-source products, including the Apache Web Server, operating under distributions of Linux other than its own.

Besides Apache, which is the best-selling Web server, Linux vendor Red Hat will support products such as Sendmail and Postfix. Red Hat officials claim that about 80 percent of all ISPs use Sendmail as their primary messaging product.

IT VENDORS GIVE THEIR VERDICTS ON MICROSOFT ANTITRUST DECISION

Friday's ruling that Microsoft "enjoys monopoly power" in the PC operating system business rings true to the industry behemoth's software competitors, but PC hardware vendors did not appear to feel as strongly about the initial decision.

Known for its hardball negotiating tactics with PC manufacturers and its success in marginalizing or eliminating vendors in a number of software product areas, competitors said that Microsoft has too much control in the IT industry. But IT vendors did not seem to feel that Microsoft's business practices will likely change because of the judge's finding of fact.
