Over the next few months, according to IBM officials, the company will increase the number of its SPCs from two to 14, to be spread over five different continents. These centers will offer developers free technical support as they port, test, and market their applications on all IBM platforms, particularly the company's PC-based Netfinity line of servers. Torvalds also tantalized the sell-out crowd here Monday night by announcing that his company Transmeta, would reveal details on Jan. 19, 2000, about its plans to deliver a "smart CPU," a chip he claimed would be a microprocessor built with software. The decision makes Dell the first major systems vendor to factory-install Red hat Linux across its entire server line. The Debian GNU/Linux bundle takes the form of a CD containing 1,440 open-source software programs including Sun Microsystems' StarOffice personal office suite of desktop applications. (CIC) on Tuesday announced that it will co-develop a Linux-based handwriting recognition and electronic-signature software development kit that company officials believe could result in the creation of a range of different products for several categories of wireless Internet appliances. Based around CIC's Jot handwriting system and its InkTools development kit, CIC and Middlesoft, a San Francisco-based start-up, jointly will integrate the finished products into Middlesoft's graphical user interface. The Linux distributor's revenue for its third quarter totaled $5.4 million, up 63 percent from $3.3 million in the same period a year ago.
