VENDORS SPELL OUT PLAN FOR LINUX-BASED HANDWRITING
RECOGNITION SOFTWARE

Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) on Tuesday announced that it will co-develop a Linux-based handwriting recognition and electronic-signature software development kit that company officials believe could result in the creation of a range of different products for several categories of wireless Internet appliances.

Based around CIC's Jot handwriting system and its InkTools development kit, CIC and Middlesoft, a San Francisco-based start-up, jointly will integrate the finished products into Middlesoft's graphical user interface.

RED HAT'S THIRD-QUARTER SALES JUMP, BUT COMPANY STILL SEES LOSSES

Citing steady global demand for its products, Red Hat on Monday reported a healthy jump in third-quarter revenue but still posted a net loss for the quarter ending Nov. 30.

The Linux distributor's revenue for its third quarter totaled $5.4 million, up 63 percent from $3.3 million in the same period a year ago. It also recorded a net loss of $3.6 million, or 5 cents per share for the quarter, compared to net income of $100,000, or no cents per share in the third quarter of fiscal 1999.

VA LINUX TO HOST ONLINE REPOSITORY FOR OPEN-SOURCE PROJECTS

Trying to sustain the momentum from its red-hot initial public offering last month, VA Linux Systems on Tuesday announced plans for an online repository capable of simultaneously handling over 700 open source projects.

The company also announced that it has locked up a deal with NetLedger, a prominent accounting ASP backed by Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison. Under the agreement, VA Linux will supply NetLedger with Linux-based servers along with a variety of integration management services to bolster the ASP's application server infrastructure, officials said.

IBM REDOUBLES ITS LINUX DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS

With increasing pressure from many of its corporate users, IBM will shift a good portion of its Internet based software development toward Linux, a move company officials hope will significantly broaden its base of software developers and shore up the sagging market share of some of its proprietary servers.

As part of this initiative, IBM will form a new unit, to be part of its Enterprise Systems Group, and will shutter its Internet Division. Irving Wladawsky-Berger, who headed the Internet Group, will become the vice president of technology and strategy reporting to Sam Palmisano, who heads IBM's server group.

IBM LAUNCHES LINUX UNIT, CLOSES INTERNET DIVISION

IBM on Monday outlined plans for a Linux initiative, including the formation of a new unit that will oversee the company's work on the open-source operating system.

Irving Wladawsky-Berger, who has been in charge of IBM's Internet division, will head the new unit, which will be part of the IBM Enterprise Systems Group, the company announced Monday. The Internet division will close, and its functions will be merged into the enterprise group, which is overseen by Sam Palmisano.

LINUX VENDOR CALDERA GETS $30 MILLION INFUSION

In another financial boost to the Linux community, Caldera Systems on Monday announced it has received a $30 million from several key industry players, most notably Sun Microsystems.

Officials at Caldera, the No. 2 distributor of the open source operating system, said they plan to use the money further fund existing operations and quicken the pace of acceptance and growth of Linux's already-rocketing fortunes. Other investors include Novell, Citrix, and the venture capital firms of Chicago Venture Partners and Egan-Managed Capital.
