THE LATEST IN LINUX FROM INFOWORLD:

* Linux captured 25 percent of server OS market in '99
* Bull to bundle Red Hat Linux, services

LINUX CAPTURED 25 PERCENT OF SERVER OS MARKET IN '99

LINUX CORNERED 25 percent of the server operating system market last year, according to preliminary data from International Data Corp. (IDC). But in terms of revenue share, Linux remains a tiny fraction of the market.

Microsoft's Windows NT system held steady at 38 percent of the server operating system market last year, while Novell finished at 19 percent. Meanwhile, all of the combined versions of Unix garnered 15 percent of the market.

BULL TO BUNDLE RED HAT LINUX, SERVICES

IT'S NOT a red cape, but Red Hat, that has prompted Groupe Bull to charge headlong into the Linux server arena. Starting next week, Bull will offer its Express5800 servers pre-configured with either Microsoft's Windows NT or Red Hat Linux 6.1.

A new agreement between the two companies enables Bull to load Red Hat 6.1 on its servers and names Bull an authorized technical partner and integrator for the combination, according to a statement issued earlier this week.

THE COREL-INPRISE MERGER: A UNION OF SOFTWARE CHAMELEONS

IN THE wake of this week's announced union of Corel and Inprise, software pundits and users alike are scratching their heads over some aspects of the merger.

The merger, which could signal yet another change for the chameleon that is Inprise, is raising questions about the company's commitment to Windows development tools and generally to platforms other than Linux.

FRENCH MINISTRY ADOPTS OPEN-SOURCE CULTURE, LINUX

STABILITY AND security concerns are driving the French Ministry of Culture to switch its mail, file, and Web servers to the open-source operating system Linux, the ministry announced on Tuesday in Paris.

The ministry is in the process of migrating Windows NT file servers at 200 sites to a version of Linux based on that distributed by Red Hat, said Bruno Mannoni, head of information systems.
