VA LINUX UNFURLS DESKTOP BOX

TRYING TO NUDGE smaller software developers towards creating applications for Linux and the Web, VA Linux Systems Tuesday unveiled an $800 Intel-based desktop system that features a full range of multimedia capabilities.

The StartX SP2, which can be ordered equipped with either a Celeron or Pentium III chip, is preloaded with Red Hat's Linux 6.1; the system will come preloaded with Version 6.2 of the OS by the end of the month. Enhancements made by VA Linux to the open-source operating system include performance improvements to the kernel, recent security upgrades, and a range of bug fixes.

LINUX SERVER SHIPMENTS SOAR 166 PERCENT IN Q4

LINUX SERVER SHIPMENTS rocketed 166 percent in the fourth quarter in 1999 compared with the same period in 1998, according to a survey from IDC.

IDC said 72,422 Linux servers were shipped, "representing the fastest-growing operating environment in the server market." Linux will continue to grow as more big-name vendors enter the market and as customers pick these products for reliability, availability, performance, and cost, the Framingham, Mass.-based research firm predicted.

NICHOLAS PETRELEY: A DICKENS OF A TALE OF TWO LINUX
COMPANIES IN THE BEST OF TIMES AND THE WORST OF TIMES

IT HAS BEEN FASCINATING watching the Linux roller-coaster ride in the stock market during the past several months, particularly Corel and VA Linux. Corel originally saw a nice bump in its stock after redefining itself somewhat as a Linux company. VA Linux broke IPO records only to plummet afterward to a reasonably priced stock. Looking forward, I'm confident in VA Linux, but somewhat ambivalent about the future of Corel.

Corel has excellent collateral, but Corel strikes me as sloppy with its execution. Take Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 for Linux, the superb new suite for Linux. If there is a realistic Linux alternative to Microsoft Office on Windows, this is it. It is almost identical to its Windows counterpart because much of the suite runs on Corel's version of Wine. (Wine is an open source programming interface that brings most of the Win32 API to Linux.)
