VA Linux flexes muscle with two acquisitions

ATTEMPTING TO establish itself as a serious player in the increasingly critical Internet infrastructure market, VA Linux Systems has acquired TruSolutions, a rackmount server builder, and NetAttach, which makes high-availability storage devices.

With the TruSolutions deal, VA Linux now has hold of design expertise and a product-line breadth that includes an entry-level 1U server to complement the high-performance 1U server, also announced last week by the company.

VA Linux Systems delivers thin rack-mount servers

FOLLOWING IBM'S LEAD, VA Linux on Wednesday announced it is delivering a rack-mountable server that can hold either one or two Pentium III chips in a 1.75 inch-thick design.

The product should bolster the company's chances of selling into the fast-growing ISP and ASP (application service provider) markets, where thin servers have been the rage. Such products have allowed them to quickly and easily add the power and capacity they need to accommodate rapidly growing client bases.

Lineo acquires Japan's USE to boost embedded Linux reach

EMBEDDED LINUX VENDOR Lineo on Monday announced it will acquire a Japan-based systems engineering company to expand the reach of its Embedix Linux-based operating system beyond Intel's processors.

The embedded Linux vendor said in a statement that United System Engineers (USE), based in Shiojiri, Japan, has agreed to be acquired by Lineo.
