LINUX USERS TO PROTEST COPYRIGHT ACT

A LINUX USERS' group in Washington, D.C., is planning a protest against parts of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which they say is being used to unfairly restrict the development of DVD software for the Linux operating system.

The group says the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) is using the law to threaten Linux developers.

LINUX WON'T FRAGMENT, RED HAT CHAIRMAN SAYS

SINGAPORE -- WORRIES that the Linux operating system could fragment in the same way as Unix are unfounded, as there are no commercial incentives for companies to produce separate versions, according to Robert Young, chairman of Linux distributor Red Hat.

Instead, maintaining a single version of the OS is important for all the players in the industry as Linux moves towards mainstream acceptance, Young said in his keynote address Thursday at LinuxWorld 2000 here.

COREL AIMS TO ADD POLISH TO LINUX

SINGAPORE -- COREL'S mission to bring Linux to the mainstream desktop has produced rapid results since the launch of Corel Linux at Comdex in the United States last November, according to Rene Schmidt, Corel's vice president of software development.

There have been more than 2 million downloads of its WordPerfect 8 for Linux office applications suite, and more than 150,000 free downloads of the Corel Linux OS, indicating broad acceptance of the open-source model, Schmidt said in a presentation at LinuxWorld 2000 here Thursday.

SGI TO EMPHASIZE LINUX OVER IRIX

SINGAPORE - SGI (Silicon Graphics Inc) will put more effort into Linux-based developments and consequently less into its proprietary Irix OS over the next few years, according to Jansen Ek, vice president SGI Asia-Pacific.

SGI is strongly focused on developing for Intel's IA-32 and IA-64 processors and the open-source Linux OS, with a key initiative being SGI's XFS file system, which can enable Linux to scale to very large systems, Ek said in a keynote speech at LinuxWorld 2000 here Thursday.
