COREL BUYS INTO VIDEOCONFERENCING COMPANY TO BOOST LINUX

COREL BROADENED ITS portfolio of Linux-based products Tuesday buying a 10 percent stake in Simply.com, maker of customized videoconferencing solutions.

Under the terms of the deal, Corel will integrate Simply.com's videoconferencing software into its desktop distribution of Linux, giving users worldwide an easier way to communicate and collaborate face to face.

ORACLE BUYS STAKE IN LINUX COMPANY

LINUX MAY HAVE gained a bit more legitimacy in the enterprise Monday as Oracle announced it is taking an equity position in TurboLinux as part of a longer-term strategic relationship between the two companies.

The agreement also calls for TurboLinux to tune its version of Linux so that it runs the Oracle 8i database optimally, particularly for e-commerce and/or mission critical applications.

KOREAN START-UP WORKS HARD TO POCKET LINUX

IT'S A SUNDAY morning and while most of Seoul, South Korea, rests, Jae-Heon Lee, President and CEO of Gmate, gets into his car and drives 30 minutes to Pundang, a large commuter town south of the city where his company is based.

"We've been working every day for the last two years," Lee said, but the former semiconductor engineer employee isn't weary. The reaction to prototypes of the company's first product, a Linux-based PDA (personal digital assistant) with the offbeat name Yopy, at the CeBit trade show in Hannover, Germany, in February, has him and the rest of Gmate's 30 employees walking on air.

LINUX VENDORS FACING TEST

DESPITE THE recent stock slide of several top-tier Linux companies, analysts and executives in the open-source community said that leading Linux vendors remain viable enterprise suppliers.

Several high-flying stocks, including Red Hat, VA Linux Systems, and Andover.Net, have been steadily trending down since their record-setting IPOs last year. But what drove stocks down -- making financial analysts, and perhaps some Linux users, take a closer look at the prospective fortunes of Linux -- was the less-than-spectacular offering by Caldera Systems and the unexpected decision of Linuxcare to pull back its scheduled IPO and replace its CEO, Fernand Sarrat.
