BMC READIES LINUX MANAGEMENT TOOLS FOR MAINFRAMES

BMC SOFTWARE AT its Assurance 2000 conference on Tuesday will reveal plans to offer Linux-based versions of its MainView Advisor management tools for the IBM S/390 mainframe platform.

Due by the end of the year, the tools will perform functions such as performance optimization, prediction, and automation, according to Chris O'Connell, director of MAXM product marketing for BMC.

COREL AND INPRISE BREAK OFF MERGER

AFTER WEEKS OF speculation, the proposed merger of Corel and Inprise/Borland dissolved this week, leaving Corel's future, and potentially the future of Linux on the desktop, in jeopardy.

The two companies mutually nixed the merger after Corel reported heavy first-quarter losses and saw its stock value plummet. Corel had filed a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission stating that it would run out of cash in 90 days if the merger did not go through before then.

IBM EMBRACES LINUX ON THE MAINFRAME

FURTHER EXTENDING AN olive branch to the open-source community, IBM on Wednesday announced its formal support for the popular Linux operating system on its S/390 line of servers after what Big Blue officials called a groundswell of demand by users of the enterprise-level servers.

After reporting more than 2,100 free downloads of the Linux kernel since it was made available for the S/390 last January, IBM will now step up its support for open-source S/390 Linux through its IBM Global Services and through freshly penned distribution deals with Linux providers SuSE Linux and TurboLinux.

RED HAT RELEASES IA-64 LINUX DISTRIBUTION

RED HAT WEDNESDAY released alpha source code to enable software developers to build applications for Intel's IA-64 architecture based on Red Hat's Linux distribution.

With the open-source distribution source code, developers will be able to create Linux-based programs for Itanium, Intel's first 64-bit processor based on its IA-64 architecture, which is expected to power high-end servers and workstations. Itanium is due to go into production in the third quarter of this year.
