CALLING IT THE "One Source Alliance," Dell Computer on Tuesday made Red Hat Linux the company's "third strategic operating system," joining Microsoft's Windows and Novell's NetWare, which the Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker already installs, according to Michael Lambert, senior vice president of the Enterprise Systems Group at Dell.

"We've seen considerable growth to the Linux operating system," Lambert said.

OS OPTIONS EXPAND FOR HANDHELDS

IN AN EFFORT to spur the development of Linux for handheld computers, Houston-based Compaq Computer will make a version of the operating system for its recently released iPaq handheld computers available to software developers through the company's new Open Handheld Program.

Compaq's release of Linux for the iPaq will allow researchers and developers to write new applications for handheld computers and other intelligent appliances, said Nora Hahn, a Compaq spokeswoman. The idea is to try to encourage use of Linux as a common operating system and development tool for handheld computers.

LINUX GETS A BOOST FROM HP, INTEL

MARKING THE LATEST industry embrace of open-source advocates, Hewlett-Packard and Intel this week released a free IA-64 developers kit that allows the Linux community to develop, test, debug, and run IA-64 applications for Intel's upcoming Itanium processor-based servers and workstations.

The Itanium-based systems will support Linux and other operating systems, according to Mike Balma, director of marketing at the Palo Alto, Calif.-based HP's open-source and Linux operations.

LINUX APPS MADE EASIER

INTEL IS PREPARING to release a new software developer kit that could allow vendors to offer Linux-based Internet appliances and home networking products that are much easier to configure and use, the chip maker announced Thursday.

The kit will allow hardware and software makers to add ease-of-use features to their products based on an industry specification called Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), Intel said. UPnP enables devices to automatically identify and configure themselves when they are connected to a network, hiding the complexity of that work from the end user.
