I guess I'll start it out with a generic post. How many members use an outside benchmarking service, has it been beneficial, and can you supply their address? Also, I know benchmarking is required by QS & TS, but is it a requirement if ISO-9000:2k? ASD... IP: Logged |

Al ö We are a small enough company that we do not contract outside benchmarking services ö so I canât help there but: A quick scan of 9001-2000 shows no direct shall requirement for benchmarking activitiesö However, 9004:2000 as part of ãThe consistent pairä does make SHOULD references in performance guidelines to benchmarking activities: Strangely enough, I can find no direct wording in my copy of 9001 relating to a section 8.5.4 ö but it does show up in 9004 ö . Things that make one say Hmmmm? Regards IP: Logged |

Al, Like Jim, I've gone over the ISO9001:2000 documentation and there is no direct mention of benchmarking as a requirement. 9004 suggests benchmarking as a tool for effective evaluation of the total performance of the organization, but, the way I read it, registrars can't hold an organization to the 9004 "guidelines". I'm currently working on a QFD project that will hopefully address several issues in the new standard. In order for QFD to be a truly effective tool, benchmarking is one of the steps in developing the QFD matrix. Unfortunately, I work in a fairly small industry where the players all hold their cards very close to the chest, so to speak. There is a good deal of proprietary technology in use and no one really cares to share (including my company). This tends to make market benchmarking difficult. Anyone with thoughts on how to accomplish benchmarking in these circumstances - I'd love to hear them. Thanks!! Mike IP: Logged |

Mike, We just conducted a benchmarking activity with a company outside of our industry. It is difficult to arrange something within your industry (even if it is large) because there is a good chance that you are dealing with competitors (or potential competitors) that do not want to share any information. However, you can still learn a lot from a company outside of your industry (even a different perspective)- about their processes, etc. They suggested that for future benchmarking activities, we choose a function/activity that we want to benchmark (ex: customer satisfaction), and look to malcom baldridge winners, press releases, magazine articles, etc. to identify potential companies. Hi Cari, Thanks for the info. I have given that some thought and will persue that avenue eventually, especially when I'm ready to push for a change to our sales department practices. (Everyone will know when this happens, the loud scream coming from the vicinity of Cleveland will be them... Unforutnately, the type of QFD matrix I'm trying to develop rates competitors quality characteristics against "my company's" target values in those same quality characteristics. Additionally, it ranks the criticality of the relationship between how well the competition is meeting the "demanded quality" characteristics of the customer vs. how well "my company" is meeting those characteristics. Certain types of secondary data will provide some of this information, but not enough to provide a thorough analysis of the data. I have also thought about asking the customer during the VOC phase, but I'm not sure how reliable that data would be either. I'm kinda stuck here... *chuckle* Thanks again!! IP: Logged |
