I have heard of Total Predictive Maintenance, is Total Productive Maintenance different, or related?

I'll be posting a TPM 'guide' in a week or so.

I'm going to assume they're the same.

But - Are you sure what you heard about was Total 'Predictive' Maintenance? Total Productive Maintenance has predictive maintenance in it but that is not all there is to it.

Folks -
Total Productive Maintenance is a system invented by the Japanese and owned by the Japanese Institute of Plant Management. It is an incredible system for increasing productivity through the reduction of loss (commonly refered to as the six big losses). I've implemented TPM and have seen the results. It's pretty impressive. Predictive maintenance is a part of TPM, but I've not heard of it as a seperate entity.

We are a Japanese owned company that has tried to start "TPM" on several occasions. We are aware of the potential benifits but cant seem to keep our management interested, currently after a grand "kick-off" we have scaled back to simply working on our "OEE" and so hopefuly we can see some benifit there and re-start the program. We contracted with Japanes Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) and have been very dissapointed with the lack of profesionalism of the consultant assigned to us in fact we almost had security remove him after he threw a temper tanthrum. So be careful of those guys, ours could be an isolated incident but so far we have not gotten what we have paid for and we have paid a lot.

Bill -
I'm sorry to hear about your problem. It may just be the consultant that is your problem. I've dealt with JIPM for a few years now (I received all of my training from them) and have been very impressed with their organization, especially their professionalism. My only gripe was I had to learn everything from an instructor who only spoke Japanese (who was obviously very passionate about TPM - a very animated man) and a translator who reminded me of a BINGO caller.
