Otherwise known as accredited certification bodies.

Registrars having systems in place to meet the requirements of one of the international standards or guides defining how certification bodies / registrars operate. These include: - IAF Guidance on the Application of ISO / IEC Guide 61 General Requirements for Assessment and Accreditation of Certification/Registration Bodies, - IAF Guidance on the Application of ISO/IEC Guide 62:1996 General Requirements for Bodies Operating Assessment and Certification/registration of Quality Systems, - IAF Guidance On the Application of ISO/IEC Guide 65:1996 General Requirements for Bodies Operating Product Certification Systems, - IAF Guidance on the Application of ISO/IEC Guide 66 General Requirements for Bodies Operating Assessment and Certification/registration of Environmental Management Systems (EMS)

An accreditation body (such as ANAB, UKAS in the USA and UK repectively) will assess the registrar's systems against the requirements of the guidance document(s), will audit office procedures and witness the registrar's audits on their clients premises. Successful assessment will leade to accreditation for a defined scope of industry sectors for the relevant guidance documents (e.g. EMS, QMS, Product certification)
