ISO 9001:2008 and AS9100 combined Quality Manual (Systems Manual)

I am working with a company working toward AS9100. Consultant wants to have a Quality Manual that supports both ISO9001:2008 and AS9100.

I have tried to tell the consultant that the manual is not required to support both, as AS9100 incorporates ISO9001 requirements. He contines to push the dual aspect of the manaul.

I have never seen a combinaton ISO/AS9100 manual before. Has anyone run across this situation?

He feels that 3rd party certification body will overlook the not applicable standard when auditing? Example if going for ISO cert the auditor will ignore AS9100 requirements?

As you said, AS9100 includes all of ISO 9001. This means that an AS9100 manual would by definition address both standards. Every AS9100 manual I have ever seen could be considered a "combination" manual. I'm not quite sure where the conflict is...

Howste is correct. If your system is based upon AS9100 it will meet the requirements of ISO9001.

My suggestion: If your Consultant is driving this, tell your consultant to take a hike. They really don't know what they are talking about in regards to AS9100/ISO9001 Manual, in my opinion.

Our AS9100 Certificate also reflects ISO9001:2000.

Actually, the consultant's advice is sound. There is no reason for multiple manuals.

I think so.

I still think I am a little confused here.

Does the Consultant want the Manual to address both requirements? If so, develop it in accordance with AS9100, then it will meet both AS9100 and ISO9001.

Or does the consultant want two separate Manuals to address ISO9001 and AS9100?

HEY!

Ask your consultant (the guy you're paying a whole bunch of money to) how a manual for AS9100 could be created without encompassing ISO9001. If he can't tell you toss his fanny.....better yet....ask for hard, absolute, and conclusive evidence that he has actual hands on experience with AS9100....and having passed some stinking Lead Auditor course don't count.

You can't do AS9100 without automatically doing, performing, including, meeting or whatever ISO9001.....That dog won't hunt!

You can't do AS9100 without automatically doing, performing, including, meeting or whatever ISO9001.....

It might be a technicality, but an organization might have certain exclusions that apply only to an aspect of their QMS and not to others.

For example, an organization that is involved with both aerospace and commercial products might not have product design responsibility for aerospace products, but is responsible for the design of commercial products.

If they had a quality manual that only addressed AS9100, they would "exclude" 7.3, but that exclusion would not be appropriate for the commercial product line.
