Product dispositioned for scrap shall be be conspicuously marked,or positively controlled, until physically rendered unusable.
All non-conforming product may not be dispositioned as scrap. You have other options with non-conforming products

-you may correct it
-you may authorise its use under concession/customer approval
-you may take action to preclude it's original intended use.May be you send the product as industrial grade when you found it not suitable for aerospace grade:).

We are AS9100 registered, currently to revision B but will be audited to rev C this winter. We do physically rendor parts receiving a disposition of scrap to a definate unuseable condition. We do, however, sometimes, identify specific pieces and maintain as a display. The parts are painted a specific color, identified as scrap (marked, stamped, stenciled etc) with the NCR # that documented the discrepancy and the part is stamped "not for production" or something equivelent. The display is a locked plexi-glass cabinent with only limited access.

Why would you want to retain scrap material?

I would guess that all parties concerned (Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality) made the decision that the product was not worth the time and/or money to rework or repair.

What do you have that could prevent its use? Welding, machines, drills or something? You could also place it in a bin, and have a service take it away, and provide a certificate of scrapping it.

We often keep nonconforming material to be used as setup pieces for future runs. We always scar items deemed scrap. We have documented how we control this discrepant material. It is "identified and controlled to prevent its unintended use or delivery". Eventually it will make it to the scrap bin that has a sign on it the states" SCAR ALL SCRAP".

We identify scrap with red and parts used for set-up or tooling with blue.
