Research, Design and Development Costing Model Procedure

I am not sure if I posted in the correct forum so forgive me in advance if I did not.
I had a request from my boss to research a costing model for Research and Design work. We are a contract manufacturer but are moving into more design work. Right now we are providing some Research and Design work, including building prototypes, for our customers but have been struggling with how to charge. Does anyone have a suggested approach? It is Medical device components as well as finished devices.

:thanks:

By the number of days/hours incur - man-days or man-hours estimated by people with relevant experience. This estimate may be further adjusted by factors such as degree of difficulty/complexity.

You may be able to get reasonable estimates after accumulating enough data and experience.

here's what i suggested to do...
1) it depends on the scope and milestones of your agreement. this would drive the magnitude. typically, these would form various sections/stages of your cost estimates.

2) it needs to factor-in the statement of work; this would drive the approximations nearer to actual estimates. this would constitute each section.
this would include the materials - operational - personnel costs
don't forget to factor the documentation/reporting and periodic review-session.

3) requirements specific to product/project/local-regulations .

4) then the overheads of any exceptions/extensions/ unforseen activities which would get added.

finally figure out how would you position your proposal to the client.
