. Provides a good understanding of what you need to build on. Do not forget the things which you learn in the studies of this certification.
Not the best resume builder I suppose (I will leave that up to others to decide) but it is a foundation to build upon as far as certifications go.

While there are sexier certs you will be tempted by starting with a background in dimensional metrology makes you fully competent as you climb the certs ladder.
I've worked for people that knew the upper level QA doctrines well enough but had no training in precision measurement, and it was scary to watch them perform measurement when they found themselves in a position where they had to - you expect any amateur to make the usual errors but not the guy at the top.

The ASQ CQIA is designed as an entry level cert, and as you take different exams, you will notice many overlapping areas, which makes the additional ones easier. Next 'easiest' is the CQPA which focuses on processes, after that the CQI builds on those. The CQI is a necessary one, but it doesnt have to be the first one, it helps to have some easier ones under your belt so you are familiar with the format.
