Acronym COP - Acronym Confusion

New to here and quality so have been having fun with acronyms. What do you do when one TLA (three letter acronym) could be two different things and context doesn't help (in this case due to inexperience and lack of knowledge)??

My example is COP. Google and here can come up with customer orientated process and conformity of production. Suspect the latter as it is a customer audit issue. Is that right? Automotive sector and we're not TS but customer is. We're lower down the food chain so kind of have to change our system (which kind of works as we have low defects/PPM figures) to meet their requirements.

As I said I'm new to it so am using the cove as a learning tool with other sources so any advice on this would help a lot. Customer orientated process or conformity of production? Which would make sense in a customer audit?

Re: Acronym confusion

Hate to throw another TLA at you, but it also could mean Cost of Production.

Re: Acronym confusion

Both make sense for a second party audit. But it would be better if you specify the exact sentence and also the scope of audit (if possible).

As we live in the world for acronyms - we should always try to get clarity on context first :)

Re: Acronym confusion

It is relating to the quality control (COP testing) so I'm guessing conformity of production. MSA, reviewing control plans / fmea to a plan for regular product (annually / bi-annually). Am I correct do you reckon? If correct what else could go into it?

Stating the obvious:
the best way to know what ANY acronym means (whether in or out of context) is to ask the person or organization which presented it. If you go to http://www.acronymfinder.com/ you will often find more than one definition for most acronyms, probably because so many "smart" people think they are saving time by using acronyms, not realizing the ambiguity and confusion they cause for folks who may be aware of several definitions for the same acronym.

If you feel you must use an acronym, at least provide a glossary for others who may have different experience with that letter combination than you.

Yes it is confirmation of production. COP testing is critical in the automotive industry. The prime motive is confirmation of production for adherence to applicable norm like emission.

The parameters, regular frequency of testing and actions against parameters going beyond target limits may be verified in the audit.

Confirmation, or conformance? We don't know for sure what it stands for because we don't know what the person who used it had in mind.

Re: Acronym confusion

It may also be contribution of production or continuity of production or even better computer operated production - for arguements sake!!

But in the automotive industry COP testing is used for confirmation of production :)

The automotive term is conformity of prodution, not "confirmation."
