Would like to have some inputs how your R&D is working to come up with ideas to improve the quality of drawings and to work in a effecient way.

How do your technician work before releasing a drawing (procedures, checklists)?

Who checks the drawing and what does this person look at?
What is the competence level of the person who do the final check - if it is performed?
Tolerance analysis? - Do you have any good template you like to share?
Detailed procedure you would like to share?

Interesting to hear from SME business with limited resources that is working with several different materials and several different OEMs.

R & D should "box up" critical parameters in the drawing. This will help Quality, Suppliers, etc, know which parameters are important and need to be checked during receiving/manufacturing.

In order to verify or validate anything, it must be well-established just what exactly is being verified / validated. This is very basic in design control.

Do you perform a decent(Go figure) DFMEA, Design for Assembly/Manufacturability? If so, do you consider those inputs in your drawing preparation?
THE MOST important, are you giving enough training and time for your designers to do the above?

How do your technician work before releasing a drawing (procedures, checklists)?
Encourage peer level participation
Encourage taking supplier feedback
Encourage to use learning from previous similar drawings procedures checklists
Identify the CTQ parameters (Critical To Quality) in every such specification
Use the clear identifier of the original part manufacturer in your specification
Provide alternates with preferential order.

Usually the output documents are CHECKED / REVIEWED / APPROVED.
CHECKED is by the technician who generates it.
More time and discussions with the technicians by the REVIEWER followed by the APPROVER makes a good output that can be executed in-house or by a supplier.

I have a story.
A packing buffer in EPS (expanded polystyrene) for an electronic product was designed, approved, released and handed over to purchase for procurement. Purchase knew a flaw in the drawing but still quickly got a quote for development of this part. A huge cost for tooling....
R&D says ridiculous ... and calls a meeting with marketing, purchase and management for action.
Management :mad: : How can we pay such a huge packaging development cost when the product cost itself is no comparison to this ?
Purchase: I respect R&D. If the specifications are to 0.01mm tolerance in the drawing, tell me how I can develop without such a tooling ?
R&D : :mg: :truce:
Lesson: lack of application

Idea to improve is to apply yourself practically to the requirement. All included , the CHECK, REVIEW and APPROVE

Somasheker - I recognize your story... in both directions...and without tol analysis.
According to your opinion:
If Technician A has made a drawing.
Who (one person or team) do the:
1 checking
2 reviewing
3 approval

What should the competence be required to do each step?

It is important to understand what contributes the most for the poor quality of drawings in your Organization. It could be poor DFMEA, or poor consideration of manufacturability or misalignment of design with cost target etc. In ideal world, quality of drawings is as good as the quality of design process. Inadvertent errors by draftsmen could contribute as well, which again I would consider a part of design process. While I agree that you cannot do away with manual check, review of drawings, etc, it is also important to focus on improving the design process per se towards First time right.
