From ECR (Engineering Change Request) to ECN (Engineering Change Note) - double work!

Firstly I am a bit confused on this matter.

If a Engineering Change Request (ECR) is requested do we first register it before approval?

If that is the case would we be doing two lots of registering when it becomes an Engineering Change Note (ECN) after approval.

Secondly, can the Engineering Change Request (ECR) form and Engineering Change Note (ECN) be on the same form? as this would be double entering as well as double registering.

Thirdly, I am lost

Any help, any documents please would be of great help to me.

Thanks in Advance

Interesting question! I am sure you will get responses to this one.

My view on this is that an ECR may be disapproved, and then it ends.
On the other hand, an ECN may be issued without going through the ECR process. Not all (minor?) engineering changes may require a formal review.

Here is an example of a procedure.

Fellow Covers, any comments?

This is part of an individual organizations practices and there are no right or wrong answers. You decide on it, define it and put them into practice. Most people use ECN or ECO (order) - one form to take care of everything. And as Stijloor mentioned, minor changes may not need a review but you may want some one with appropriate authority to approve it. Samples of these can be found in the post attachments list searchable with keywords such as ECN, ECR or ECO.
