What Forum User Name can I choose?
Virtually any user name you want that is not already taken. But... Please:

No company names or email addresses.

There are restrictions to prevent some words from being used. The system will provide an error message if you attempt to use one of the designated 'stop' words.

Names are caSe SenSItiVe and can include letters, numbers, a space, or a combination of these.

If you have a problem, please Email the Administrator

Why can't I put URL links in my Signature?
We've opted not to allow active URL links in signatures. Anyone clicking on your user name sees your Profile page. There you can list things like a link to your web site home page, your occupation, a biography and more details, if you like.

How do I report inappropriate posts by other members to the moderating staff?
If you feel an individual member is out of line, please PM a moderator or use the "Report this Post" link found at the top of each post, rather than publicly flaming the member or starting a fight in the forum. If you really, really dislike what someone is saying, you can also use the Ignore feature.

Member Code of Conduct and TOS (Terms of Service)
IMPORTANT: The Elsmar Cove Forums attract a wide variety of experience levels. The discussions here range from the very basic to high level, intellectual debates - We welcome all. However, we generally expect a higher standard of professionalism from all visitors. Personal attacks and insults WILL NOT be tolerated, and we expect all posts to add value to each discussion. Anyone posting a personal attack or inappropriate messages, as deemed by the moderators and/or the administrators, may be subject to a formal warning or, in extreme scenarios, being BANNED either temporarily or permanently. In the case of temporary bans, further incidents may subject the poster to moderator actions such as pre-moderation with the result being an editorial review of all posts during an unspecified length of time by forum staff, or a PERMANENT BAN. Appropriate posting behavior during a pre-moderation status period will be rewarded with the restoration of full posting rights. Failure to follow the rules thereafter may result in the poster losing posting rights for a period of time, or permanently in some cases at the discretion of forum staff. If you feel you are subject to a personal attack, DO NOT RESPOND TO IT WITH YOUR OWN PERSONAL ATTACK WITHIN THE FORUMS. Click the Report This Post icon at the top of the post to Report the Post to Moderators and Administrators for review of the questionable post. A response to a personal attack will be treated as just as bad as the original attack.

This is the entire Elsmar Cove Forums TOS, which you had to 'Check' as "I Read This and Agree to Abide by the Terms and Conditions" when you Registered.

I've registered, why can't I post or start a new discussion thread?
The forum software sends a Registration Activation email to the email address you used to register with, normally within seconds. You must Verify/Activate your Registration by clicking on a link in the email. Many people who register have had their Activation email flagged by mail filters (or Rejected) - Please check your bulk sender and/or 'spam' folders first. If you have still cannot find the Activation email, please Contact us to activate your registration.

Have you received your Activation Email and Activated your Registration? If not, it is probably an email issue. Please see the Invalid Registration E-mail Addresses discussion thread.

If you have further problems, please Contact us.

Can I comment on, or ask questions about, a specific company by name?

Yes, you can and may. However, if you have any 'relationship' with the company, financial or any other relationship, you MUST specify your relationship in the post. It is called a 'Vested Interest' and must be disclosed. Of course, as long as you do not Register with your real name, and you do not put identifying details in your User Profile, or in the details in your post, there is *virtually* no way anyone can identify you.

That said, in todays world, one never knows. I cannot say that will never happen. I will be VERY surprised, but it IS possible... I will never communicate any log files to any company or organization for any reason EXCEPT in a case wherein we are SPECIFICALLY ordered to do so by a Court of Law or an entity such as the US's (ridiculous) Homeland Security Administration (or what ever its name is this month) because they could easily arrest and 'disappear' us... :( We won't go to jail (not to mention 'disappear') for anyone...

In addition, you take full responsibility for the content of your post. From the Cove Forum TOS: "2. MODERATION
b. All discussion thread posts express the views of the post author, and the website owner will NOT be held responsible for the content of any message, post or file attachment."

However, the expectation is that posts will reflect the honest experiences of the poster. While we would like to be able to verify the stated experiences of every poster's stated experience, it would be impossible for me to do that given my limited resources. If you have a complaint about the content of someone's post, please use the Report this Post button at the top of the post.

We will NOT allow any unfounded complaints. we will personally respond within 48 weekday hours to any serious complaint about an improper post. However, if your complaint is 'just', we will back you up as far as I possibly can.

Copyrighted Documents / Materials and Related Issues
Please do not post any copyrighted materials in full. You may post excerpts as long as they meet the 'Fair Use' criteria. If there is any doubt about copyrighted material either in a post or in an attachment to a post, the post may be 'hidden' by placing it in a Moderation Queue while the Moderators discuss the post and/or attached file.

Fair use is a legal concept that allows the reproduction of copyrighted material for certain purposes without obtaining permission and without paying a fee or royalty. Purposes permitting the application of fair use generally include review, news reporting, teaching, or scholarly research. The idea of fair use originally arose for written works. But with the advent of digital technology and the Internet, fair use has sometimes been applied to the redistribution of musical works, photographs, videos, and computer programs.

The limits of fair use are not always clear. Factors include the size or extent of the passage or material reproduced, the length of time for which the material will be used, the number of copies of the reproduced work that will be distributed, and the effect of the use on the market value of the original copyrighted work.

Anyone in doubt about whether a given activity constitutes fair use of a copyrighted work should consult an attorney. It may be faster and simpler to request permission of the copyright owner.

FAIR USE and CORRECTNESS NOTICE: This site contains copyrighted material the use of which has not always been specifically authorized by the copyright owner. We are making such material available in our efforts to advance understanding of environmental, political, human rights, economic, democracy, scientific, and social justice issues, etc. We believe this constitutes a 'fair use' of any such copyrighted material as provided for in section 107 of the US Copyright Law. In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Section 107, the material on this site is distributed without profit to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving the included information for research and educational purposes. For more information go to: If you wish to use copyrighted material from this site for purposes of your own that go beyond 'fair use', you must obtain permission from the copyright owner.

In addition, I do not guarantee the correctness of the content of any post and/or file(s) attached herein. The risk of using content from the Elsmar Cove web site and forums remains with the user.

If you feel a post in the forums, either in the post body or in a post attachment, violates a copyright you hold, please click the Report This Post icon at the top of the post, immediately. The post and/or attachment will be reviewed within 48 hours of receipt of your complaint/claim and I will contact you with the resolution. I do require the following:
1. Your full Name (and Company, if appropriate),
2. The full URL of the thread and the Post Number in the thread, or the Post URL,
3. Details of why the post and/or attachment is in violation of copyright law,
4. Some type of Proof of the Original work in question,
5. Make sure you give me a valid email address,
6. You MUST include your Telephone Number and your Postal Mailing Address so that I can verify that you are the true copyright holder.

If you believe that someone else has posted copyrighted content in a post and/or a file attachment, click the Report This Post icon at the top of the post to Report the Post to Moderators and Administrators for review of the questionable post.

Searching for Existing Discussion Threads on your Subject

If you want to Search for existing Discussion Threads in the forum to find existing discussion threads with the topic (subject) you are wanting to ask about, there is a forum Search Engine: The Elsmar Cove Forums SEARCH page.

Note that there are a number of Options in the forum Search page. Please take a minute and review the options (visible in the screen shot below).

Note that every search engine works somewhat differently than other search engines. The vBulletin forum software does have a search engine, but it is not as powerful as, or as fault tolerant as, (for example) Google's search algorithm.

You will notice there is also a 'Google' search box on the forum Search page. If you are familiar with how a Google search works, you might want to use the Google search function. NOTE: A 'Google' search will search the entire Elsmar Cove Web Site, not just the forums. This may be advantageous.

How To Ask A Question or Start a Conversation by Starting a New Thread in a Forum

NOTE: You must be Registered to Start a New Thread. Registration is FREE - It's just a way to keep some control of postings.

1. First, Figure out a Title. Please - Think about your Thread Title. Spend a few minutes developing your Thread Title. This will enable the most helpful people to help you. Your Thread Title is the first thing people see. The more detail, the better. A title that just says something like "I need HELP FAST" doesn't draw much interest... ; Make your Thread Title detailed, but intriguing.

NOTE: You will see a Search Box which you can click to see if there is a similar existing discussion thread.

2. Go to the forums Home Page which lists all the forums.
3. Choose a Forum - Scroll to the forum you feel is appropriate for your 'Thread' (question, comment, whatever it is). Yes - it's a long list and sometimes your topic could fit into more than one forum. Just make your 'best guess' as to which specific forum is most appropriate.
4. Click on that forum and you will arrive at the 'Forum View' listing the posts in that forum.

Near the top of the page you will see a 'New Thread' button.

Near the bottom of the page you will see the same New Thread button.

Click on either of the New Thread buttons.

If you have posted less than 10 posts, you will see this page:

Usually this wil not be an issue because you will probably be in the right forum if you were in the right forum when you pressed the "New Thread" button. This will help you get acquainted with the different individual forums. The below picture is a part of the list of forums which will appear:

If you see that your New Thread would be better in a different forum, choose the appropriate forum and click the "Continue" button. You will then see a page much like the following:

After putting in a Thread Title, you can check to see if there is an existing Discussion Thread on your topic. Just click on the "Check for Existing Threads" button and a Search Page will pop up and let you know if there are existing discussion threads on your topic. NOTE: You will see there are 3 options for this Search:

In some cases a moderator may move your post to a more appropriate forum, and/or may rename the Thread Title to make the thread more easily found in a search and more 'reader friendly' so that you will get more useful replies to your issue / scenario. Feel free to contact any moderator for assistance.

For more detailed instructions, including more graphic illustrations, or to ask specific questions, please see this discussion thread: How To Ask A Question or Start a Conversation by Starting a New Thread in a Forum.

How to Attach a File to a Post in a Thread
Attaching a file to a post in a thread is easy once you know where the 'box' to do it is.
You can attach up to five (5) files in any individual post.
The total space per file can not exceed 2.8 megabytes in size.
The key to attaching a file is to get into the posting 'screen'.

For all the details, including graphical screen shots, and to ask any questions if you have problems, please visit this discussion thread: How to Attach a File to a Post in a Thread.

How does the Ignore feature work?
If you dislike posts by a particular member, you can choose not to view their posts (unless they are a moderator or forum admin, sorry!). Simply click on their user name in any thread. You'll see their profile page. Look for the Add USERNAME to Your Ignore List. Click on that, and you'll no longer see the person's actual posts in threads (and they won't know this, so you won't be upsetting them). You will still see that they've posted, but all that will be shown is a message, "This message is hidden because USERNAME is on your ignore list." Should you change your mind and want to see a particular post, use 'View Post' link you'll see associated with their post. You can also use the 'Remove user from ignore list' link that will also be shown within the thread or in your user control panel to lift the block across all posts.
