Question What is the expected length, content of a Food Safety Manual?

What is the expected length of a Food Safety Manual? Procedures, instructions, forms, etc are not included, just the policy statements or road map to the rest of the organization’s documentation. Perhaps it will vary from organization to organization. The question should be “What are the essential information to include?” or “what are the contents of the FSMS Manual?”.

If anyone can share a sample FSMS manual would be very much appreciated.

4.2.1 General
The food safety management system documentation shall include
a) documented statements of a food safety policy and related objectives (see 5.2),
b) documented procedures and records required by this International Standard, and
c) documents needed by the organization to ensure the effective development, implementation and updating of the food safety management system.
Where does it say in the standard that you need a manual?

To answer Howard's question, ISO 22000 does not say that you "need" a manual so there is no expected length.

It is totaly up to you if you want a manual to support and clarify your system.

Manual is not a requrement. But I was tasked to write one and I wanted it not too little details at the same time not way to long. After I finished the initial draft, I will post it here for critics.

Re: What is the expected length, content of a Food Safety Manual?

1. A manual is not a requirement for ISO 22000. However, it is a good way and method to record a lot of thinks like your CCPs etc, etc.

2. You could model or structure it along the lines of the ISO 9001 manual.

3. Even for ISO 9001, the length/contents are dependent on the users and organization. It is up to you and your organization. If you read this thread: QMS (Quality Management System) Manual - The Boss Wants a 4 Page Manual - What to Do?, you will realize that in general, it ranges from about 60 to less than 5 pages.

4. Therefore the 'best' length and content is what your organization and its users feel most comfortable with.
