Transportation of Food & Non-Food Products Together

Dear All,

Now a days our new logistics Manager take an idea to devise the Trucks in two parts. First part for frozen products and 2nd part (Door side) for chiiled products. A partition contained temperature controller on both sides is in between. Some days ago logistics department started transporting Frozen Chicken in 1st part and Flowers in chilled part.

We (Quality Department) visit the flowers green houses and found that flowers are being sprayed with pesticides and many times send to market without wait (even pesticide safety period didn't finished) because these are without fragrance.

We claimed that through air circulation that pesticides residues can enter into frozen chicken and we are putting consumer at risk.

Logistics claimed that as Chicken is in packed form so no harm is expected.

I'm thinking to send some samples (finished packed product) to 3rd party for pesticide testing to solve the issue.

Any guidance, sugesstions are more than welcome

Sounds like the main worry is contamination/cross contamination. Sounds like the worry is contamination from opened doors rather than poor partitioning. If this is the case, having doors on different side may help.

With regards to test, I don't think you are going to get anything because the possibility of contamination is low and therefore the possibility of you catching a contaminated sample is almost zero.

I would carry out a risk analysis instead.

Dear Harry,

Good day. 1st of all thanks for your kind guidance. In actual the main point is all pesticides has some specific safety period. After that safety period the residues in product being sprayed goes down from MRL (Maximum residue Limit).

Here in my company 48 Hrs before shipment product is being sprayed. Safety Period of residues is not finished yet and product is shipped with a Food Product.

In Partition 1st portion is Frozen area and 2nd portion is chilled area. Now circulated air from chilled section to frozen section (Food section) can carry the pesticides residues which is the main concern.

I might cleared the situation now

Again thanks for your kind reply

Ghulam Mustafa

Circulated air can also carry airborne pathogens from contaminated flowers.

Dear Fellows,

Good day. I found some guidelines about shipping of different food products at the same time in one vehicle.

It may help anyone at the forum.

Logistics claimed that as Chicken is in packed form so no harm is expected.

Do the personnel in Logistics making the above judgement have the appropriate technical credentials to make responsible determinations of packaging materials penetrability and absorption, or any of the other technical judgements involved in their "no harm is expected" stance? Is there clarity that their judgement isn't clouded by their focus on accomplishing their own task, i.e. logistics, at lower cost?

If a person doesn't have the requisite competence to understand the issues involved and/or that person's judgement is biased, that person's expectation of no harm isn't reliable.
