Differences between IATF 16949 and AS9100

Is there a gap analysis available on the differences between these two standards? We are MUCH more heavily automotive, but have some hardware parts that are supplied to an aircraft customer who is pushing us to become AS9100 certified. My hunch is that the new, more stringent IATF Standard will cover most of the significant AS requirements. I would welcome any comments/suggestions! Thanks!

I don't know. I would have though they would be reasonably close. But, I have a friend who's company is AS9100 certified and when I talk to them about having some TS (now IATF) 16949 parts done it's like I am talking a foreign language.

There is a great spreadsheet developed by Howste comparing the standards @ https://elsmar.com/standard-comparison-matrix-(summary).xls Unfortunately it is an old document and the standards being compared are now obsolete, but it should give you a feel for the differences.

As I recall I mostly did that comparison while I was at airports and on planes. I would consider doing one for the new standards if I was still actively auditing or consulting in the automotive industry. Unfortunately it's hard for me to justify taking the time to do it for a standard I'm not actively using, and I don't have airport time anymore.

It would be nice if someone would take the format and do something similar...

Hi

In my opinion at first glance the major difference bw AS 9100 D Vs IATF 16949 are;-

1. 8.1.2 of IATF, Configuration Management

2. 8.1.4 of IATF, Prevention of Counterfeit parts

Rest broadly same if the organisation is already ready for IATF 16949.
Open for team views. Thanks

Does anyone have a gap for IATF 16949 and AS9100D? We implemented IATF 16949:2016 and are adding AS9100D. Thanks!

I'd take a longer glance, and point out the SIGNIFICANT difference in the supplier development requirements, just for one (in IATF) which isn't even close in AS9100D. Also, the Internal Audit requirements are far more exacting in IATF than AS 9100D, linked to competencies for all types of audit(or). To dismiss the major differences as those two clauses is worrying me...

I fully agree with you Sir, that Supplier selection, control, monitoring & development as per AS 9100 D is no where nearer to IATF 16949 requirements (like Human ethical behaviour of suppliers / their Contribution to product safety etc., Thanks for the input.

Dear Marc,

Thank you for your interest.

Is there any updated document about this topic? (16949:2016 and AS9100RevD)
