What classifies something as "automotive"? Looking for input?

I was posed a question today and as I'm still in my rookie season for dealing with the automotive standard i am looking for some input.

The base of the question is more or less what classifies something as "automotive"?

I have heard multiple debates back and fourth from its anything with on-road use to its just passenger vehicles (Semi's, Buses, Heavy equipment are not included).

Thoughts? Any proof of your point of view vs opinions would be greatly appreciated but all input is welcome. Thanks in advanced?

I would say automotive is anything related to a motor vehicle. So everything would be included.

Just about anything with a motor that moves about on land. Even motorcycles are often classified as "automotive".

Remember that individual countries may use similar but different definitions (Italy as an example).

Just remembering that the issue came up in the past where Italy had its own definition what what was automotive. And the IATF doesn't have every automotive manufacturer in the world in its grasp.

Oh but it does. Companies must now include all automotive work within their scope and audit regardless if they are subscribers to the IATF standard. And I assume that's what the OP is dealing with since it is in the IATF forum.

Being that you posted in the IATF 16949 forum, I would go with Golfman's quotes.

That said, in my experience it would also be expanded to anything your customer demands that you consider automotive...whether it formally is or not.

A customer demand doesn't MAKE it automotive...but customers can and do "classify" things as automotive whether they are or not...

From FAQ’s for ISO/TS 16949 3rd Edition 2009[/URL]

I think this will satisfy an answer to the debate.

It all stems from a customer that nowhere in the contract does it state the parts we are provide are "automotive" and in their CSR it states a few different time the the minimum it so be ISO 9001. We have included them for some reason in the 3rd party audit as being automotive and auditable to TS (Now IATF) so i'm just trying to figure out why we have done that in the past since it seems all our parts go on Buses, Semi's, or heavy equipment.

Thanks for the help.
