Ease of use.
Look at the IATF copyright notice; second paragraph!
I have done this for years for personal copies. After being burned by .pdf files I purchased that only allow one print and the printer jammed, I learned to buy paper copies and scan them myself. Again,
for personal use.
That said, technically a personal copy made for ease of use may be a violation of copyright however I have not found a court case where this has come up.
Also - If you are making a copy so that you may use a copyrighted product in case the original is stolen, damaged or destroyed, your copy typically falls within the doctrine of fair use.
Lastly, if a person makes a copy for their personal use, I seriously doubt the IATF (in this case) will be breaking down any doors to find out about it.
