Does anyone have a template or example they can suggest for writing up internal audits based on the new standard? The ones Im inheriting are the TS 16949-standard-statements-turned-into-questions-&requests-for-evidence, which seems cumbersome or longer than need be.

That's your problem. Internal audits should NOT be based on "16949-standard-statements-turned-into-questions-&requests-for-evidence". A template won't really help either, TBH. Simply create a shopping list of things based on your own process(es).
