IATF 16949 - Who should be assigned as the Product Safety Officer?

About product Safety Officer requirement, who is better to be nominated in this role is it the Product Designer under from Engineering Department or The Quality Manager? and why?

For me , it's better to appoint the Product Designer since he's more expert in design so risk for product safety issues related can be easily grasp and manage. And since one of his defined responsibility is to actively involve in New product development stage activities , I think his experience counts more and this is also his edge to be nominated as potential PSO.

For Quality Manager, though he's actively involve in updates of claim and Claim handling management generally , I don't think that he is suitable for PSO than the Product Designer. Who do you think is the proper nominees for PSO? Please help. I need an advice.

thanks!

Re: IATF 16949 Product Safety

Welcome to The Cove.

Without a question the person who is familiar with product failure modes and safety factors would be in a much better position to make competent calls about product safety.

Note: It appears that a moderator split a post off of an existing thread, which is now the first post in this new discussion thread, because it didn't really fit the topic/focus of the thread it was added/posted to, thus Sidney's reply.

Yes, I split the question into a new thread in order to be more specific to the question concerning the product safety officer.
