Metrics to Evaluate Performance and Effectiveness of Internal Auditors

What metrics do you use to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of your internal auditors?

Right now we track audits to plan, but I'm having a hard time thinking of other objective performance indicators.

A Team Auditor requires 2 consecutive assessments with the recommendation to upgrade before attaining the title of Lead Auditor.

Lead Auditors are to attain the evaluation of "Maintain Lead Status" without addition action being required. There is no downgrade option.

Auditor Effectiveness Ranking/Scoring

Norman:
We use a quick (confidential) survey that we send to auditees that has ten questions relative to the audit and the auditor.

Everyone who participated in the audit gets a survey either via email (www.zoomerang.com) or a hard copy if they dont have email.

Some of the questions are:

1. The audit was planned and scheduled to meet my needs.

2. The auditor put me at ease during the course of the audit

3. The auditor was professional.

4. The audit results were fair and unbiased

etc, etc.

We have a ranking of 1 to 4 on these (no nominal for people to drift to) and the average score is then applied to the audit teams effectiveness. This also helps us know where we need to do more training.

Hope this helps. Good luck. -
