Lifecycle:
Some chemicals have been undergoing packaging changes. Jugs that were once rounded are becoming more squared in shape. This has the effect of:
1) More of the chemical fits into a carton
2) More chemicals now fit on the truck
3) Fewer trucks needed to transport the same quantity - carbon foot print is reduced
4) Fewer trucks traveling to transport the chemical means less wear and tear on the road, which reduces consumption of materials and energy to repair and resurface.
5) Back to the cartons: less corrugated means less energy and water usage, both for making the new boxes and recycling the used boxes. Now we are "cradle to grave"
All of this from a design change of the container.
Compliance obligation:
Some countries and states prohibit the use of some raw materials, and want to minimize others. There may be rules on types of containers used to contain various types of chemicals. Then there is a requirement to develop a Safety Data Sheet for manufactured chemicals under the Global Harmonization program. This is legal compliance.
Some customers want to avoid chlorides, fluorides and bromides. This is conformance to customer requirements. We usually reserve the term "compliance" to those rules set out by government.
