Hi all!
I am curious? How are people confirming mill cert standards for raw material? ie Bar, round, sheet, plate. I have been using google and what few Mil standards I have in my possession. I really dont want to have to buy the standard everytime I get an order for the same type of material I used for a customer, but this one used QQ instead of ASTM etc.... What is your procedure? I am being audited for the initial ISO9001:2001 in january, so I could use some direction.

Ask your material supplier for a copy of the standard. If they're "certifying" compliance with it, they should have one. If they don't, then you have yourself an "opportunity." :D

why would you have to buy a standard over and over again?
Once you have it, you have it. Until it gets revised anyway.
I have a library of standards as third party documents in the document control system that are reviewed at least once a year to ensure they are current.

the way I figure is that if a customer wants you to used material in accordance with a standard, you ought to either own the standard or not accept the business.

Look at it this way... I'm auditing your contract review processes. I look at the a customer requirement on one of your MOs that calls out ASTM B16. One of my next requests will be "please show me your copy of ASTM B16 and show me how you control it".

If your procedure is to compare the mill cert with the standard, then you will need the latest version of that standard.
As for the auditor, he will ask that age old question;"How do you know that what you are getting is what you want?". In other words, show me your objective evidence.
As for the procedure, is comparing mill certs to a standard good enough? Depends on your application. If you are building outdoor grills it may be. If you are building a nuclear facility it may not.

Are you sure the MIL standards referenced are still valid. Many of the military standards have been obsoleted and replaced with the the ASTM standards.
I am curious why you would need to buy the standard "everytime you get an order"? Discordin has some good advice.

If the supplier is certifying to the current standard can't you just use the cert as proof? We have not had our ISO audit yet but have been doing this for our raw aluminum under QS for years.
