Outsourced Process or Supplier? Purchased Formed Metal Tubing

Question:

I purchase metal tubing that has been formed, I store it in my warehouse until I sell it to my customers (tier 1).

With respect to ISO9001:2000, do I consider the companies that supply the formed tubing an "outsourced process" or just treat them as ordinary "suppliers"? Obviously I will need to exhibit control over them irrespectively.

Would it be an outsourced process if I own the material and have someone form it for me? And a supplier if I did not own the tubing before someone processed it and sold me the formed tubing?

Thanks!

It depends!

Hi, pondo. Sorry to be awkward but there is no easy answer. It depends on what the scope of your system is. If you manufacture a range of tubular products but buy in these products then the process is outsourced. If you distribute tubular products then these are purchased items.

Without further info, I would expect that if you have someone form material you own, it would be an outsourced process. If you buy finished formed tubing, it would be purchased goods.

I had a similar doubt a few months back and the gurus here helped me out... check the bottom of this page and you will find similar threads about this same subject...

Why do you want to know? What is the difference, meaning how would the answer affect how you do business?

If your scope of business is to simply re sell purchased material formed metal or whatever to a customer, then the the entity from which you purchase this material is a supplier not an an outsourced process.
Which obviously makes adherence to the clauses of some standards easier.

If you give the raw material and the supplier is forming the tube according to your specs.,then it is a 'Job work',falling into the category of "outsourced process".

Even if you don't own the raw material, and the supplier is forming the tube according to your specifications, then also it will be treated as "outsourced process".

If the tubing is available ready-made,you are buying it 'off the shelf',then it falls into the category of ordinary supplier.

Hope this helps
