Can a WI (Work Instruction) be alone without depending on a Procedure?

Q

QAMTY

Hi, all

I´m adding forms and WI´s and have the next question

Normally, I assign a doc number to a procedure in this way:

PR-ENG-001 Means procedure of Engineering area and consecutive,
in the last days have had the need to create Wi´s depending from this procedure, so I do this

for this WI number, I use W1-PR-ENG-001 for other WI, is W2-PR-ENG-001 and so on.

Wil be a case where a WI is not hanged up from a Procedure?

In this case I´ll break my rule and maybe I could use

WI-ENG-001.

Are there really cases where WI´s have not parents?

Thanks

Documents should follow a hierarchical structure only when it makes sense to do so. If you need a work instruction that's not logically linked to a procedure, there's no point in either linking it to something that's not a logical antecedent or creating an antecedent just to keep a hierarchy intact.

There is also no need, unless it makes sense, to differentiate in name between procedures and instructions.

Just do whatever makes sense and works for you and don't get all wrapped around an axle worrying about what it's called

Be aware that work instructions can be embedded into checklists which can also act as travelers, records, etc. It is up to your creativity and the situation.
